Alabaster is a city in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. The population was 21,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shelby County. Alabaster is located on the Eastern border of Montgomery County and the Western edge of Jefferson County. The name "Alabaster" comes from an early Cherokee name meaning "white ash." The first white man to visit Alabaster was Captain James Cook in 1795. He named what he saw as a beautiful valley after his mother's birthplace, Chalcedony Inlet on Vancouver Island in Canada. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson offered $10,000 for any information that could lead to the discovery of a natural gas field in Alabama. A team led by John Wesley Powell discovered and mapped this gas field while exploring nearby Tombstone during their 1859–60 survey of Arizona Territory; they called it "Alabaster". In 1872, Alfred Piggott moved his entire family to Alabaster from Mobile and founded Gulf Sulky Oil Fields near present day downtown Alabaster with $1 million worth of Texas oilfield equipment he had acquired when working for Standard Oil Company (later ExxonMobil). Gulf Sulky began production in 1901 and lasted until 1978 when it was sold to ChevronTexaco for $3 billion dollars. The original refinery building still stands today as part of Chevron's Corporate Headquarters buildings complex within Downtown Alabaster limits

Alabaster is a small town in Alabama, located about 20 miles east of Birmingham. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. Alabaster is one of the oldest towns in Alabama and has been around since 1796. The name "Alabaster" comes from the word "alaband," meaning white lead or alum (a type of lead). In 1821, a group of English settlers traveled to what is now Alabama and discovered an area with high alum concentrations. They named this area Alabaster because of this discovery. The first settler in Alabaster was George Washington Hardison who arrived in 1818. He built a cabin on land that he bought from the Creek tribe. Hardison's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Alabaster. Other early settlers included James Meeks, who settled in 1821; Ebenezer Richardson, who arrived in 1824; John Whitehead, who came to Alabasterettes on March 3rd, 1830; and William Denton, who moved to Alma on December 12th, 1830.
