Alabaster is a small town in north Alabama. It is located on the Flint River, about 25 miles northeast of Birmingham. The population was 9,463 at the 2000 census. The first white person to live in Alabaster was James Henson in 1816. He built a cabin on the riverbank and named it "Hennessey". In 1824, Jeptha Cushing arrived from Kentucky and set up a log house near the current courthouse. In 1835, John Slaton purchased land east of town from Wm. Moultrie for $2 per acre. He built an academy and taught school there until his death in 1864. His son George founded Slaton College in 1870, which became Auburn University later that year. The present day courthouse was completed in 1886 by Akins & Bacon Architects with funding from Andrew Mellon and donated by Jeptha Cushing's widow Hannah Slaton Cushing. The building is made of red brick with black granite trim and has a hexagon footprint typical of many early 20th century courthouse designs statewide. Alabaster's economy is based primarily on agriculture; production includes cotton, corn, soybeans, potatoes, apples, honeydews and beeswax products. There are also several small businesses located around thetown center catering to local residents including banks (including First National Bank), grocery stores (Jingles Markets), pharmacies (Paccarstown Drugs) as well as numerous campgrounds/resorts available close to town while visitors are able to explore nearby attractions such as Bellefontaine Battlefield State Park or Botanical Garden near Birmingham or Tuscaloosa County Fairgrounds just outside of town limits

Alabaster is located on State Route 431 east of Decatur and north of Huntsville. The town was founded by white settlers in 1881 and named for the alabaster quarries that were nearby. The first store was opened in 1885 and the first school was built in 1886. The post office opened in 1893. When publishing service began within Alabama in 1865, newspapers were published here until 1907 when it became so difficult to get printed paper that printing started up again only once more in 1912 (only 3 issues). A new courthouse was built here around 1913 and served as the seat of Marshall County government until 1925 when it moved to downtown Huntsville. During World War II Alabaster served as a sub-station for RAF Huntingdon airfield which housed fighter bombers from Europe during the war years; however, no evidence remains to provide proof this actually happened. After the end of World War II Alabaster slowly regained its former prosperity with many businesses opening up including two banks until 1991 when both closed due to economic recession throughout much of Alabama which impacted rural areas such as Alabaster most hard since they are usually one half or less of overall rural income while Cities have exploded with growth averaging over 50% since 1980 creating even more competition for jobs making life harder for smaller towns like Alabaster trying to keep up/ compete against an ever increasing urban area while still providing basic services like schools and municipal run infrastructure
