Alabaster is located on US-61 south of Birmingham and north of Huntsville. The first known permanent English settlement in what is now Clarke County was made by John Smith in 1624 when he and his men founded an outpost on Mobile Bayou near what is now downtown Alabaster. A year later, he built a log cabin here which still stands today as part of the city's history museum. In 1785, General James Ketchum established Fort Gibson in what are now downtown Birmingham and eastern Clarke County to protect settlers from Creek Indians who were roaming the area looking for new land to settle. From 1815 to 1821 bothAlabama and Tennessee served as parts of Missouri during the Mexican–American War because the United States did not recognize Mexico's victory over Spain over that same period; however, no military action took place within Alabama because hostilities were localized around Mobile Bayou between Spanish colonists living there (the "Tolosa") and American forces besieging Spanish Fort San Felipe de Barrientos on Red Mountain northwest of Montgomery until after Mexican independence had been declared four months earlier. A post office called Alabaster was established at this location in 1819, but it was discontinued two years later due to lack of mail service between Birmingham and Mobile; only one shipment per month arrived here then! In 1830 John Troup moved his family from Lawrenceburg, Kentucky to present-day Alma where theyestablished a cotton gin operation before moving back east across the state line into Greene County in 1836 when that county was created from part of Clarke Circuit including parts of current Vestavia Hills).
