Alexander City, Alabama is a small town located in the state of Alabama. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. Alexander City, Alabama was founded in 1821 by General Alexander H. Stephens and his wife, Sarah L. Stephens. It became an important cotton center during the antebellum period. The city was destroyed in a fire in 1871, but was rebuilt and renamed Alexandria after its patron goddess, Alexandria Ocala of Florida. The city has experienced various name changes over the years, including Alexander City (1881-1901), Alexandria (1901-1971), and Alexandersville (1971-present). The town of Alexander City was located on the banks of the Mobile River in what is now Monroe County. General Alexander H. Stephens had come to Mobile from Georgia to become a land speculator and surveyor when he discovered what would later become Alexander City. When he found that there were no first Federal lands available for sale in Alabama, he decided to settle here instead and named the settlement "Alexander City." He also built a fortuitous location for himself: on high ground overlooking the Mobile River so that he could monitor shipping movements nears or far away from his land holdings downriver. The original settlers were primarily Creek Indians who lived nearby until they were displaced by European colonists in 1810. In 1821, when General Alexander H. Stephens arrived atAlexanderCity as part of his expedition to purchase additional land for federal purposes east ofMobile Bayou,[1]the Creek Indians had already been replaced by Africans as residents of this area due to Forced Migration policies instituted by President James Kroupa under American Rule following Indian Removal.[2] African Americans began working on plantations along Mobile Bayou beginning shortly after white people moved into these areas following Reconstruction[3][4]. However, African Americans did not have access to education or jobs commensurate with their social status which made them ineligible for citizenship within American society; thus they continued to be considered second class citizens with few options other than indentured servitude within white man's society[5]. As time passed however progress was being made among both races through education and industry although some integration still needed to occur throughout America due mainly because many whites believed colored people should remain segregated under racially dividing lines rather than integrating into mainstream society where resources were available for everyone regardless their color[6]. In 1901, after more than 50 years living separate from each other due largely because of racism perpetuated against African Americans by whites,[7],when Judge Augustus Bogan offered amnesty to all blacks who resided within Alabama without taking any property from anyone,[8],the Creek Indians finally united behind their new government leaders Anthony Johnston (1800-1892) and John Upshur (1892-1972).[9] Although it took some time due mostly because most chiefs wanted peace before implementing much reforms,[10], eventually all Creeks came together and formed their own state called “Creek State” USA on November 17th 1921 effective November 20th 1921 with Elisha Payne serving as governor.[11][12][13][14] With this eventful milestone reached، planters quickly started developing land aroundAlexandria while new businesses sprang up such as insurance companies[15][16],linen mills[17],and cotton ginners[18],[19],[20],[21]; making it one of the busiest commercial cities in Alabama at that time
