Athanasia is a town in Athens County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,811. The name "Athanasia" was given to the community by General John Custer during the Battle of Little Bighorn. The town was founded on October 15, 1871 when the Athens and Pike Railroad reached Athens from Mobile. The first post office in the community was established in 1872. A store and hotel were built soon after and operated until 1907. In 1957, Athens became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,500 residents. The city experienced rapid growth in the early 21st century; by 2016 its population had grown to over 10,000 residents. That year also saw construction of downtown Athenia's $14 million dollar library and parks system completed as part of a larger effort called "The Athena Project." Today, Athenia is located about 20 miles south-southwest of Birmingham via I-10 and US-36/3rd Street exits exit 309B which leads east to Moselle Road proper while US- 36 continues southwest past Piney Grove into neighboring Baldwin County
In 1812, Athens was founded by General James Fenton in what is now the city of Athens. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was first established and grew rapidly thereafter. In 1827, Athens became the capital of Alabama after being named by Governor Troup. The city's growth continued as cotton plantations were developed in the area andenny businesses sprang up to support these endeavors. In 1859, Athens became an electric light company town and two years later, it also became a dry goods store town. In 1865, Athens became the county seat of Clarke County following its creation from parts of Butler and Pickens counties. By 1890, however, Athens had become an agricultural center with large fields devoted to crops such as cotton, corn, soybeans and tobacco. By 1910-1911, however, heavy industry had begun to grow in the city with breweries and mills developing along downtown streets. This change led to increased traffic congestion on downtown streets which began to negatively impact Athenians' quality of life.
