The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the world's most powerful air forces. In the early 1920s, Auburn's air force was one of the most powerful in Alabama. The airport and its facilities were used to train pilots for the country's military. In 1942, after World War II ended, the air force was disbanded and the airport closed. However, it reopened in 1948 as an aviation museum and remains open today.
