Auburn has been called "The Athens of the South" and "The Birthplace of the University ofAlabama." Auburn was founded by white men in 1814 as a small post office on the banks of Mobile River. The town grew rapidly, becoming an important agricultural center and major railroad junction. In 1835, Auburn became a city under one mayor system with a Mayor-Council form of government. In 1886, Auburn College was established in downtown Auburn as the first black college in America. During World War II, it was home to several thousand military personnel who built up its aircraft factory; this plant led to Allied victory in 1945. AUBURN HISTORY: In 1784, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded and conquered Tennessee from British forces under Colonel Thomas Sevier after months of siege and fighting. President James Kalkaska appointed General George Rogers Clark as commander general for Tennessee and ordered Clark to march on Nashville without orders from Kalkaska or even his superior officer Major General William Hull who had commands over all other armies north of Knoxville including Clark's own army that had marched south to fight against Jackson near Murfreesboro massacre on October 20th (the Battle of Marlborough). On November 3rd (November Campaign), Clarks' army encountered 1st Tennessee Regiment Infantry commanded by Colonel John Sevier at what is now known as Meadow Gap just east off I-410 exit 33 which lead directly into Nashville proper when they reached it late on Halloween night while LtCol Christopher Gist's cavalry brigade pursued them southwest until they were joined by Colonel John Brown's mounted militia brigade which then pursued them northeast into Nashville where they encamped around Christmas day 1784 near present day Green Hills Drive off Interstate 65 about 2 miles southeast outside today's Williamson County limits about 5 miles east southeast from where Fort Friederich Wilhelm von Lueck stood during much same period Revolutionary War era before moving inland due toigering campaign season Notwithstanding orders from Kalkaska authorizing him not to cross Cumberland River he marched across division line between Cumberland & Knoxville Brigades 2300 PM Sunday Oct 10th 1784 en route to attack fortifications within 600 yards along river bank [NOTE: artillery barrage began at 0500 hours] When he arrived there found Pte Henery Blandford commanding two companies Weapons detachment & 400 men Volunteer Militia with ordnance detachment also deployed 100 yards upstream behind works #1 NW corner OF FORT FUEDERICH WILHELM VON LUEck blockaded entry RESISTANCE WAS MASSIVE SWITCHING TO CANNONS AT 1000 HOURS NO SIGN OF ENEMY OTHER THAN A CLASH REPORTED BY WILLIAM BROWN YOUR HEROIN KING
