In 1946, USE merged with the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet (MEMEF) to form NATO’s Sixth Fleet (6th MEF). The 6th MEF became responsible for all naval activity within NATO’s eastern Mediterranean theater of operations following Germany’s successful Invasion of Yugoslavia in April 1945. Through its efforts, NATO helped protect Austria from occupation by Nazi Germany; facilitated airlift shipments essential for Operation Overlord; destroyed more than 100 German submarines off Croatian coast; and assisted in the evacuation of more than 2 million people from Greece during the spring of 1946. The city was founded on November 5, 1825, by General Andrew Jackson and named for Decatur County, Illinois. The first post office in Decatur was established on December 1, 1827. It moved to its current location in 1883. In 1907, Decatur became an incorporated town with a population of 13,000 people. On July 15, 1960, it merged with Marshall County to form a consolidated municipality with a population of over 50K people today. The name "Decatur" originally referred to only the city limits and not the entire county. This changed when the merger took place and Decatur now refers to both the city limits and all of Marshall County
