Since its inception in 1892, the Enterprise Police Department has been a part of the community. The department is dedicated to providing quality service to the citizens of Enterprise and surrounding areas. In honor of their history, the department has created a gift history that goes back more than 100 years. The first policemen on Enterprise's police force were men who had graduated from local high schools. They were hired by Mayor W.H. Hargrave and Lieutenant William Covington to help run the department. The officers were given shotguns and handcuffs as their initial equipment. In 1907, Captain John Pope was appointed Chief of Police and he made several changes to the department including giving officers radios so they could communicate with each other more easily. He also began using dogs for patrols instead of horses because they would sniff out criminals before they could do any damage. In 1912, Captain John Pope died leaving his position open for selection by his successor, Lieutenant George Aiken Jr.. Lieutenant Aiken was a graduate of Auburn University and had worked as an officer in many cities around Alabama before coming to Enterprise. He quickly became known within the department for his experience and leadership abilities which led him to be chosen as leader of the unit when Pope died suddenly two year later without leaves or successors being able to be elected into his position due to term limits set in place at that time. lieutenant aiken continued leading the unit until he was replaced by Sergeant James Ladd in 1916 after Ladd left active duty due to World War I service requirement; however, lieutenant aiken continued working as an advisor/manager on special units such as night patrols until 1920 when he retired from full-time law enforcement after 37 years on the job having held every rank from captain through sergeant major; during this time period lieutenant aiken also served as president (1921-1925) of the county board of education (1st predecessor).
