Fairfield is a small town located in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. The population was 1,914 at the 2000 census. It has been reported that Fairfield was founded in 1836 by John P. Fairchild and his family. The first post office in Fairfield was established in 1839. In 1868, the community of Fairfield merged with nearby Eufaula to form a single municipality. The current name of the town is thought to be derived from an incident which occurred during Reconstruction when local white men were angry over laws passed by the Ulysses S. Grant administration that favored African Americans over whites.
The town of Fairfield was founded in 1835 by James J. Goode and his wife, Sarah. The Goodes were the first to live in what is now Fairfield County. In 1830, the area that would become Fairfield was part of the Mobile District under the jurisdiction of the Circuit Court of Mobile. The First Judicial Circuit included all of Alabama and Mississippi. In 1838, Congress created a new judicial district which included parts of Mobile and Alabama, making it one circuit with two judges instead of one judge per circuit. In 1861, following Confederate Invasion of Alabama, Fairfield became a part of Confederate Alabama Territory and was known as "The Fairest City in the Confederacy." It remained in Confederate hands until 1865 when it reverted back to Union control. In 1870, John Crain built a mill on Buffalo Creek which became an important industry for earlyFairfield residents. The mill produced flour for local markets and also manufactured cotton goods such as hats, gloves, shirtwaists and overalls. After John Crain's death in 1893, his son-in-law William Hine took over running the mill until 1907 when it passed into private ownership again. In 1916 Fairfield voters passed a prohibition referendum asking if they should be allowed to drink alcohol within their town limits while still being responsible adults who could make free choices about how they lived their lives without government interference The referendum failed but helped fuel Prohibition efforts statewide throughout America
