Foley, Alabama is a town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. Foley is named after Welsh immigrant John Foley and his family who operated a grocery store in the town from 1892 to 1907. The Foley family also donated land to form the current town square. The first post office in Foley was established on December 12, 1892. It was renamed as Pryor on February 14th of that year. In 1907, John A. Foley Jr., owner of the Foley grocery store donated land for a new school district which would eventually become Jefferson County Schools. The first building for the heart of the new school district was built on what is now Main Street in Foley and it opened its doors to students on September 1st of that year. In 1969, this building served as the county courthouse until it was replaced by a more modern facility in 2006.
