The town began to grow rapidly after 640 residents took up permanent residency when a railroad was built through central Alabama in 1885 linking Tuscaloosa with Mobile and other eastern cities. In 1902, an oil well was drilled near present day Highway 231 south of town and led to increased industry development including pipelines running through Foley to Mobile Bayou; this led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street which became known as "The artery of civilization." In 1916 local author Booth Tarkington lived for two years in rural Minden Township before moving to nearby Decatur where he published his highly successful novel "Strangers from Another World."Tarkington's book aroused interest throughout much of America due its descriptions of life at white country estates along Mobile Bayou during prohibition era when such activities were not considered legal under United States law. Foley is a small town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Foley was founded in 1881 by John A. Foley and his brother-in-law Amos Nance. It is named for General Joseph E. Johnston who fought in the American Civil War and died near Foley in 1865. The town was first settled by pioneer farmers from New York and Pennsylvania who arrived between 1881 and 1883. By 1884, the community had a post office, three churches (oneMethodist, one Presbyterian and one Baptist), a schoolhouse and 30 homes.
