Coffee first originated in the Gadsden area in 1847. A group of men from Gadsden gathered to discuss what they would do with all the coffee beans that were being produced in other parts of Alabama. They decided to start their own coffee shop, and named it The Coffee House. In 1850, a store called The General Store started selling coffee. By 1853, there were over 10 coffee shops operating in Gadsden. In 1865, the town was renamed for Confederate General Robert E. Lee after he surrendered at Appomattox Court House. One of the first places you would find coffee was at the courthouse where people could purchase it for consumption at home or take it to work. However, by 1870, only two cafes remained in Gadsden and most residents had turned their backs on caffeine altogether due to its high price tags and lack of variety. For many years thereafter, cafés serving java were all that existed in Gadsdens streetscape as businesses closed their doors one by one until finally chain stores such as Starbucks took over in the early 2000s and continue to serve up quality java today!

Gadsden, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, and the county seat of Marshall County. The population was 20,701 at the 2010 census. Gadsden is located on the Mobile River adjacent to Mobile Bay and its tributaries including Bolivar and Tombigbee Rivers. The area that would become Gadsden was first populated by Native Americans from what is now Mississippi in the 17th century before being moved to Alabama in 1819 during the Mexican–American War for strategic reasons. Gadsdnians are proud of their history and culture, which has been preserved through architecture such as courthouse Square, General Robert Ewell's home plantation - named for him - and dozens of downtown businesses still open today including banks, restaurants and theaters. The name "Gadsden" comes from an English soldier who fought under General John Coffee during Indian Wars in1775-76 and later settled in this area around 1800. He donated land to form what becameMarshall County. In 1819, when Mexico joined with America in war against Spain, General Andrew Jackson ordered all native American tribes living east of the Appalachian Mountains must leave or be expelled within 24 hours or face military occupation by Ulysses S Grant's forces; Gadsden natives were among those forced to leave their homes. As cotton prices rose during Reconstruction following World War II, many African Americans relocated to Gadsden because it offered better economic opportunities than cities like Detroit or St Louis – areas where they risked discrimination or violence based on their race or ethnicity. By 1990 black residents made up just 10 percent of Gadsdens total population but had generated more than 60 percent of its GDP (adjusted for inflation). Black businesses have thrived throughout recent years despite discriminatory practices by local officials – most recently when a Wal-Mart store was opened near downtown after a boycott campaign led by Malik Zeddie Jr., one of Gadsdens largest African American business owners
