Gadsden, Alabama is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. Gadsden is located on the Alabama-Florida state line. It is part of Birmingham metropolitan area. The first real settlement in what would become Gadsden occurred around 1814 when Captain John Cline and his family founded a ferry crossing over the Mobile River near present day Clifton Park. This early village was known as "Cline's Ferry Landing" and functioned as a stagecoach stop on the way to Mobile for traders and farmers looking for cotton fields in that region. In 1837, Jno Epps built Fort Gaines on the banks of the Mobile River adjacent to modern-day Gadsden; this was one of several forts erected during the American Civil War to protect Confederate forces moving across the river from Union forces stationed along its banks. After Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, most ofAlabama became Union territory following Ulysses S Grant's decision not to pursue Confederate leaders into Tennessee after they abandoned their capital city of Montgomery instead of following Grant's orders to do so. However, some former Confederate troops remained in Gadsdenshooting forays downstream into the Indian Territory until their surrender at Camp Butler near Dallas on May 12th 1865; these men were later called "The Arkansas Gang". After Reconstruction ended in 1877, many African Americans moved into Gadsden from rural areas throughout Alabama due to advances made by President James Garfield subsequent to his inauguration in March 1880 which ordered all grants of land south of Mason–Dixon Line be cancelled without recompense having been given those north thereof - this order effectively destroyed much black economic opportunity within white supremacist Georgia and Alabama communities throughout Appalachia southward). Gadsden, Alabama is located in the state of Alabama and it was founded on December 26, 1819. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson’s father-in-law, James Gadsden. Gadsden became an important community for cotton traders and settlers because it had a good water supply and plenty of space to grow crops. The first store in Gadsden opened its doors on February 14, 1825. By 1830, the population of Gadsden had grown to about 350 people. In 1835, General John Coker took command of Confederate forces during the Battle of Cullman and he ordered his troops to burn down all the homes in Gadsdensville. This destroyed most of Gadsdensville’s economy and left many residents homeless. The town continued to grow but with the onset of the American Civil War, most inhabitants turned against their Confederate government. On April 9, 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down all nine churches in Gadsdensville while they were services were being performed by Reverend Coker. Over 1,500 people were killed as a result of this attack and many more were injured or lost their homes. This event helped spurUnionization in Gadsden which eventually led to its eventual annexation by Birmingham City Council in 1865. Aftermath: The Union victory at Gettysburg allowed black Americans such as James Meredith to become citizens without having to fight for their rights
