Gardendale, Alabama is located in the southern region of the United States and has been a part of the air force since World War II. The city was once known as "The Big Town" because it had a large military population. The air force presence in Gardendale began with the activation of the 1st Bombardment Wing on December 12, 1942. The wing was activated to support hostilities in Europe and was responsible for aerial bombardment and nuclear bombing operations. In 1945, the wing was disbanded and its personnel were reassigned to other wings within the Air Force. However, the city's military population continued to exist until 2003 when all active duty members were transferred out of Gardendale. Sinceactivation of 1st BW at Dec 12th 1942 there has only been one gift from an AFB detachment (1BW) stationed here- A plaque/flagstaff dedicated to Col John Smeaton CBE DFC AFC who died 27th Aug 1969 at RAF Driffield(Horsham).

Gardendale, Alabama is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 8,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Gardendale became settled by settlers from Georgia and Tennessee in the early 18th century. In 1859, the town was incorporated as a result of an act of the legislature. The community has been located on this site since 1798 when Captive John's Creek passed through what is now Gardendale and flowed into Mobile Bay. At first it was thought that this creek must have come out of Pensacola Bay because there were no other rivers or creeks near Gardendale at that time. After some research it was determined that Captive John's Creek actually came from Indian Land and not from Pensacola Bay as had initially been thought. In 1892, two years after incorporation, Gardendale erected its first schoolhouse which still stands today on Spring Street in downtown Gardendale. The second school building also remains standing on Second Avenue across from the library/community center complex; however, it has largely been destroyed by fire over the years (it currently houses a small grocery store). In 1955, Gardnerdale School District No. 1 merged with three other districts to form Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPHS). JCPHS retains much of its original architecture including many of the school buildings in downtown Gardendale and several blocks north of First Street along US-1A (now known as 2nd Ave.). Today’s downtown district features more than 20 businesses including several banks and a post office dating back to 1935 which replaced an earlier structure built by Gardnerdale citizens for $4 per week! As one can imagine, due to its central location within Jefferson County – within minutes’ drive of all major cities – Gardendale has become extremely popular both for residents and visitors alike over recent decades; most recently experiencing significant development with both retail space available on Main Street as well as new construction underway on 4th Ave., just south of downtown district boundaries! This growth has led to increased traffic congestion on 2nd Ave., especially during peak hours; but fortunately this issue appears to be slowly starting to change with plans currently being made to reroute I-565 away from main thoroughfares towards commercial areas such as 2nd Ave./Main St.. This will likely help reduce gridlock significantly while maintaining access to shopping opportunities for locals & tourists alike!

Gardendale was founded in 1819 by Captain James Gardiner. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War and died at the Battle of Gettysburg. The town population grew rapidly during the early 1800s, and by 1824 it had a newspaper, courthouse, and school. In 1828, Gardendale became an incorporated village. By 1860, the population had reached 5,000 people. During the late 19th century and into the 20th century, Gardendale experienced growth due to its strategic location as a transportation hub on Mobile Bayou and its ties to agriculture. In 1923, Gardnerlane was annexed by Mobile County; however, it remained an unincorporated community until 1974 when it became part ofMobile proper.
Gardendale was first settled in 1839. The town was originally named "Bellefontaine." It was renamed to Gardendale in 1881 after the estate of General James D. Gardnerville, which later became a state park.
