The history of the United States Air Force in Gardendale, Alabama dates back to World War II. The first USAF unit stationed in Gardendale was the 413th Fighter Group which was activated at RAF Lakenheath on October 1, 1943. The group flew P-51s and later became a Tactical Fighter Wing when it moved to McGuire AFB, New Jersey on September 17, 1947. The wing then deployed to Saharan Air Forces Base in 1951 before returning to McGuire AFB in 1958 as the Third Air Force Headquarters. In 1969, HQ USAFactivated the 5th Wings Tactical Fighter Division at Gardendale with F-4 Phantom II fighter aircraft and it remained there until 1992 when it was disbanded. The role of the USAF garrison in Gardendale has changed over time but its importance has never been greater than during the Cold War era. During that time period, Gardendale served as home to one of America’s premiere airfields for strategic bombing operations; it was also home to two nuclear weapons plants operated by plutonium production facilities under Project Bikini Atoll. Today, USAF Garrison Main is still an important function within the community and provides support for military activity both inside and outside of town limits. The units stationed here include: the 915th Reconnaissance Squadron (Airborne), 3d Mobility Brigade Combat Team (Heavy), 501st Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), 4th Bombardment Wing (Medium) – all part of Joint Base Andrews – and numerous other tenant commands across several states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida Georgia , Kentucky Louisiana Mississippi North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Texas .

Gardendale, Alabama is a town in Clarke County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Gardendale was founded in 1881 by Colored people and named for General Andrew Jackson. The first white settlers were farmers who came to the area in the early 1800s. In 1916, the post office was renamed Gardendale after John Gardiner, an American general and politician from Alabama who served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War from 1877 to 1879 and who also served as Reconstruction Finance Board chairman from 1895 to 1897. Gardendale has two churches: First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church. The community has a pool and tennis courts, two football fields (one with a synthetic surface), two basketball teams (the Gadsden Falcons and the Mountain Brook Warriors), one baseball team (the Gardendale Grays) and four playgrounds- three full size with six lanes each; one half size which has eight lanes; one that is made out of concrete with a playing field on top The Golf Course Club of America offers lessons for all levels including amateurs/amateur golfers/professional golfers through their courses in Gardendale
