In Hueytown, Alabama, the United States Air Force's 1st Bombardment Wing has a rich history dating back to World War II. The wing was first activated on September 3rd, 1942 as the 2nd Bombardment Wing andInitially flew Douglas B-24 Liberators. On September 29th, 1942, the wing was redesignated as the 1st Bombardment Wing and converted to Consolidated C-47s. The wing served in various campaigns including the Battle of Midway, which took place on June 6th, 1944; Operation Market Garden which occurred on September 11th of that year; and the Korean War where it participated in numerous airstrikes against North Korea. In 1957, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron were transferred from Hueytown to MacDill AFB in Tampa Bay Florida for storage until sold to the Japanese at an auction in 1964. Since its activation as the 1st BW in 1942 through 1957 when it was redesignated as1st BW/Hueytown then HQ & HSqdn/Stlgty before being sold to Jpn in 1964 this USAF unit has played an important role not only within USAF but also throughout Southeast Asia providing air support for US allies during their conflicts with China and North Korea

Hueytown is a small, unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,033 at the 2010 census. It is located near I-565 and US-422. Hueytown has a post office and two churches: Resurrection Lutheran Church and First Baptist Church. The name "Hueytown" was given to the community by General William Tecumseh Sherman during his April 1865 march through Alabama from Chattanooga to Selma. Sherman called the community "Hueyville" after General Robert E. Lee's headquarters in Virginia City, New Mexico Territory (now Albuquerque). The first white people to live in Hueytown were David Hilton and his family who built a cabin on the banks of Cedar Creek in 1868. In 1881, John Gentry founded Gentry grocery store here with Store No. 2 as his business address. From this store Gentry started selling groceries direct to residents of Hueytown which became one of Montgomery County's most successful shopping districts until it lost its prominence during the 1960s when Interstate 5 was constructed along its original routing

Beginning with the Douglas DC-3 airliner, American manufacturers began producing jets for military use; these include piston-engine airplanes like Lockheed P-38 Lightnings and North American P-51 Mustangs)and turbojet airplanes like Bell Jet Ranger (equipped with two Pratt & Whitney Jumo 004 engines). By 1945 – just four years after America’s entry into World War II – military jets had become an overwhelmingly important part of American aviation
