Jacksonville, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Jefferson County. The population was 109,811 as of the 2010 census. It is the only city in Jefferson County. Jacksonville is located on the Gulf Coast of Alabama and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification Cfa). Jacksonville was founded in 1817 by James Robertson and named for him, John Jackson. The first post office was established in 1818 and was called "The Folly" because it sat atop a hill on the site of what is now downtown Jacksonville. In 1828, Jacksonville became an incorporated town when it passed an act to do so from Mobile County. Its charter read: "That all inhabitants within this limits may enjoy good order and safety at all times." In 1840, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived with his army near Mobile Bay to attack Union forces under General George Buford; he destroyed many homes along Broadway before being forced to retreat due to lack of food or ammunition. However, Jaxsbury residents still remember seeing General Robert Ewell's horsemen gallop down King Street during that battle following his escape from prison at Fort Pillow some time later that year.
