The Jasper Naval Air Station (JAS) is home to the United States Navy's Seventh Fleet. The squadron has been present in Jasper since 1948 and participated in many engagements during that time. In addition, the squadron also operates a variety of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The first helicopter deployment was on October 10, 1948 when USS Enterprise (CV-6) deployed two Sikorsky HUSKARs to provide cover for an amphibious landing operation at Gadsden Bay. The Ninth Naval District detachment flew EC-121H Neptune maritime patrol aircraft from NAS Jacksonville during the Korean War. In 1957, JAS became home to CVN-79 which served as the flagship for Commander Seventh Fleet until its retirement in 1979. CVN-79 was then replaced by CVN-68, which served as Headquarters for Commander Seventh Fleet from 1978 until its retirement in 1992. This history is continued with USS John C Johnson (CVN 75) which arrived at JAS on January 17, 1998 and began her fourteen year career as an air wing commanderdisablement forward operating base operations . Johnson was decommissioned on September 30th 2003 and transported back to Norfolk VA where she will reside until her future is determined.

The population of Jasper was 3,814 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by Scotsmen in 1825 as a stop on their wagon train from Tennessee to Mobile Bay. After the Civil War, most of the Scotch-Irish immigrants who had driven cattle to Alabama joined other Northern Irish immigrants in making this area their new home. By 1860, there were only a few hundred people living in what is now Jasper. The first post office was established in 1881 and until 1945, it served as the only town within continuous Jasper County. The three main industries that have been important to Jasper over time are agriculture, mining and logging. Farming has been a majorstay throughout history because it is one of the most reliable methods of providing food for local families; furthermore, it provides an income for farmers and ranchers that allows them to maintain their homes and businesses. Mining has also been important because it provides employment opportunities for locals; however, mining face many challenges such as environmentalism which impacts production negatively; moreover, labor costs are high so exploitation of natural resources often sidelines small towns from becoming economically viable entities. Logging has also been an important industry due to its accessibility to timber resources which can provide jobs and income well into into adulthood; nonetheless, logging faces many challenges including climate change which will impact production rates and sustainability
