Jasper, Alabama is a small town in Baldwin County, Alabama. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Baldwin County by population. Jasper is located on the east side of Baldwin County and has a total area of 3 square miles. The history of Jasper begins with black settlers who arrived in 1820. The county was organized in 1836 and it was named for General James Wilkinson, an American general who served during the Mexican-American War. In 1881, Pearson Brothers Chemical Company opened a chemical plant in Jasper which remain one of the most important local companies to this day. The company manufactured products such as gasoline, kerosene, lubricants and paints until it closed its doors in 1984. Since then, Jasper has become known for its antique shops and collections of period furniture and architecture. Jasper, Alabama was founded in 1819 by James K. Polk and his brother-in-law, General Andrew Jackson. Jasper is the oldest town in Alabama and the county seat of Morgan County. The town was named after Jasper, Scotland, where Polk had been born in 1795. The first post office here was established on January 1, 1821. In 1830, the town incorporated as a city with a population of 20 people. It would grow to its present size with a population of over 200 people by 1900. The townsite that now stands at the junction of US 278 and SH 9 near Mount Pleasant was first set aside for farming in 1820 by James K. Polk and Andrew Jackson as part of what would become known as the "Jackson Purchase." For several years afterwards it lay within the limits of Mobile County but in 1827 it becameMorgan County's second county seat when Baldwin County added its portion to Morgan County. Jasper itself became an independent municipality on December 22nd,1829 following a vote by its citizens ratified by a commission appointed pursuant to law). The original plat for the town center which still stands today ( bounded north by US 278/SH 9 ), shows four blocks long with one block wide streets running east-west and one block wide streets running south-north; two churches on one side street corner; two stores on opposite sides street corner; three homes (two stories high) each behind store buildings fronting onto either side street corner between Churches & First Street - thus forming what is today known as "First Street". Jaspers growth spurt continued until about 1840 when cotton prices collapsed making agriculture unprofitable so most residents left for good or returned to their original occupations; however some few stayed behind to build residences such as Post Office #1 which still stands today In 1850 David Atchison organized what later became known asthe Pony Express Company from Columbia SpringsKansas using routes through Pike's Valley including Jasper then up through Montgomery & Rogers Counties Delivery Service route via Decatur thence into Mobile Bay area

By 1890, Jasper had reached its peak as an agricultural center with over 100 businesses. However, the economy quickly collapsed during World War I and the Great Depression.
