The United States Air Force (USAF) has been providing support to the city of Leeds, Alabama since 1948. The service has a long history of deploying gifts and donations to local organizations in the area. One such tradition is the deployment of air force helicopters to deliver gifts to local businesses and individuals. In recent years, the service has also become known for its annual "Gift-a-thon" event which celebrates its support of local businesses. One of the most famous Gift-a-thons held by the USAF was in 2009. This event was attended by then President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama as well as many other dignitaries. These submissions will then be turned into a gift idea book that the Air Force will release in early 2019. The purpose of this book is twofold: first, it will help military families plan and organize their deployments more efficiently; and second, it will provide inspiration for how to give the best Deployed Gift possible to your loved one. Leeds, Alabama is a small town located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leeds was founded in 1871 by Welsh immigrants who arrived in the area during the antebellum period. The original settlers were mechanics and farmers who worked on farms and construction projects around the city of Birmingham. The town grew quickly due to its location near Railroad Street and Sturgis Avenue, which made it convenient for businesses and residents to get around. Leeds also had a large manufacturers district which attracted manufacturers from all over America including Singer Sewing Machines, Joplin Mills, American Can Company, Eaton Corporation, and many others. Today, Leeds is still a thriving community with active businesses and an strong cultural heritage. There are several churches in the town such as First Baptist Church which has been serving the community since 1865; United Methodist Church which opened its doors in 1884; and Jehovah's Witnesses Chapel which was built in 1951. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Leeds also has some of Alabama's most famous landmarks such as Olde English Hall (built in 1903), Green Lake Pool (opened in 1922), and High School Stadium (which was built in 1911).

Leeds began as a small village on the north side of the Opelika River. In 1881, the community was renamed Leeds after General John Fenton Leeds who served as Commanding Officer of Confederate Forces in West Tennessee during the American Civil War. On July 4th, 1882, General Fenton Leeds offered free land to any person who would relocate within five miles of his new village. The first residents moved into their new homes on October 15th and they were officially incorporated as a city by Act of Congress on December 6th. The name changed again in 1916 when it became known as "Leeds-on-the-Hudson" after Colonel Edwin Hudnut who served in World War I with the United States Army Air Service. The municipality has seen many changes over its history; however, two constants have been its strong economy and large population size which has allowed for cultural diversity to be shared among its citizens. In addition to its rich agricultural tradition dating back to early settlers, Leeds is also home to several popular tourist attractions such as Battlefield Park where visitors can experience battles from both world wars; White Sands National Monument overlooking Lake Chatico; and Shakespeare Birthplace Museum which houses artifacts from various periods throughout English history
