The name Leeds comes from "Leeds" and "The Well". Leeds was founded by families who came to the area in 1879 as part of the Cherokee Nation's effort to gain land west of Mobile Bay. The town was named after John Leeds, an Englishman who had come to Mobile in 1819 as a trader and later became a state legislator. In 1888, the first Baptist church in Alabama was built in Leeds; it remained active until 1955. In 1951, Leeds became one of two cities (the other being Birmingham) to be served by the newly created Jefferson County Commission. In 1975, when Auburn University opened its new main campus on what would become downtown Leeds, much excitement followed suit; development continued through the late 1980s and early 1990s with many large-scale projects such as Interstate 5's I-65 interchange reconstruction and new shopping malls popping up around town centre. However, during this time period crime rates increased noticeably and there were several riots that took place throughout centralJefferson County due to problems with drugs or gangs not being solved by law enforcement officials

Leeds, Alabama is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 561 at the 2010 census. It began as a post office on May 25, 1879, and became a city on December 12, 1907. Leeds is the county seat of Jefferson County. The town was founded by James Denton in 1879 as a small community on the banks of the Mobile River. The first store was built near what is now downtown Leeds and consisted of a couple of logs with an opening into which customers could put their baskets or other items to be sold. A sawmill soon followed and also produced lumber for local buildings and furniture. In 1907, when it became clear that Birmingham was becoming rapidly developed as the leading city in Alabama, Leeds decided to move its municipal government to Birmingham so that it would not become overwhelmed by new arrivals from across the state who were still living in rural areas. This decision proved fateful for Leeds because after Birmingham's incorporation as a city on December 12 of that year, business opportunities dried up and many people left the town en masse; by 1920 only 10% of the original population remained within its limits – compared to more than 90% in present-day Birmingham! In 1922–1923 local property developer John Hargrave spent $1 million dollars building what is now known as City Hall Drive (named for him after his private donation) which he intended to serve as both an amusement park and shopping center for residents of contiguous townships that bordered on his development: Acworth proper (northwest), Sheffield Heights (southwest), Lauderdale Heights (southeast), Springdale (southwest), Valley Park (northeast), Moselle Shoals (east) – all located within less than one half mile of each other! Unfortunately this ambitious project never came close to fruition due mainly to lack of funds and Hargrave's death just prior to its completion; however City Hall Drive remains one of Bradford County's most popular tourist attractions today! In fact since its inception City Hall Drive has been home continuously –albeit intermittently –to either an amusement park or shopping center!
