The Coast Guard gift history in Montgomery, Alabama goes back to 1907. The first Coast Guard station in Montgomery was established at the foot of Mountain Brook Boulevard. Stationers from Miami, Florida donated two cannons and a flagpole to help build the first local Coast Guard post. In 1915, the station moved to its current location on Stonewall Jackson Boulevard and became an operational base for the Coast Guard. In 1924, the Coast Guard took over responsibility for providing law enforcement services along Alabama's Gulf coast. This led to the establishment of a patrol detachment at Montgomery which would continue providing law enforcement services until 1993 when it was transferred to Mobile County Sheriff’s Department. The Montgomery Area Council of Governments formed in 1969 made it their goal to support and enhance service by purchasing equipment from various agencies across Alabama including the Coastal Guardsmen who serve as our police department counterparts on our inland waterways. As we approach 100 years since our inception as a Coast Guard station in Montgomery, it is evident that we have played an important role in keeping coastal communities safe year-round while also enhancing tourism opportunities within our city limits.

The citys growth has been steady despite some challenges; such as violent crime rates which have plummeted in recent years due to a variety of public investment programs designed to reduce violence around downtown areas while keeping neighborhoods open and safe for residents and businesses. In January 2019, Ulysses S. Grant Wood Jr., namesake of what would become famous as Woodward Avenue (named after him), died at age 92 following a long battle with pancreatic cancer

In 1916, the Coast Guard became an independent branch of the U.S. Department of Defense with responsibility for patrolling all American waters west of Mexico City. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has responded to numerous emergencies including natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes and flooding; terrorist events such as 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina; and military conflicts such as World War II and Operation Desert Storm. Today, there are over 14,000 officers and sailors working for the Coast Guard across 158 countries aroundthe world.
