In the early 1960s, the United States Air Force deployed a gift of air power to Mountain Brook, Alabama. The donated helicopters were used in Operation Desert Storm, and since then have been put to use in various other military operations around the world. In honor of these service members and their contributions to our country, we are proud to present this history of the USAF's deployment of helicopters in Mountain Brook. The first helicopter donation from the USAF was made in 1961. The Bell UH-1Y Huey was chosen as the gift because it could be easily converted into an attack helicopter. On July 14, 1961, Colonel James Hartsfield III accepted the gift at Riverbend Airport in Birmingham, Alabama. At that time, Hill Air Force Base was only a training base and there were no combat aircraft stationed there yet! Since its deployment to Mountain Brook, both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Odyssey Dawn have seen more than 25% of all excess RAF Volunteer Reserve (RAF) helicopters being sent back home for refurbishment or conversion into flying museums! These flights across America have also become known as "Huey flights".

It can also reach high altitudes to find survivors or help with rescue operations.

The goal of the program was to recognize and remember those who served in the military during World War II. The 1946 book "The Air Force Heritage Unit" described how the Air Force Gift History Program began: It was not an easy task at first, for many people had no idea what war or air force involved. But after a few years of hard work by our Historical Branch it seemed that we had accomplished something which nobody else could even dream of!

The United States Air Force has been deploying air forces for many years now and the gift history of the USAF is reflective of this. The USAF was founded on August 17, 1947 as the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAF/E). It was through this organization that America began its involvement in World War II. In 1945, the USAF became involved in Operation Overlord which led to the Normandy invasion. After the war ended, America wanted to continue its participation in global conflict and so it formed NATO. The USAF then became a mainstay in American military policy throughout the Cold War. In 1994, after twenty-eight years of service, both within NATO and outside it, NATO disbanded. With that came a need for new organizations to take over certain tasks within Nato such as defense against terrorism and nuclear arms control. America responded with Operation Joint Warrior which focused on unified operations across all services inside and outside Nato. This created a unique gift history for the USAF because it meant that different branches could work together more effectively than ever before possible. Additionally, Joint Warrior also signaled an end to America’s reliance on overseas bases which had been prevalent during much of its military history. Since 2001, when President George W Bush came into office, there have been several changes within US military policy making it difficult for commanders to operate without support from Headquarters at Fort Belvoir south of Virginia Beach where they report directly to Mr Bush himself. These include UAV deployment (President Obama authorized their use by our troops), Afghanistan: strategy review; Iraq reconstruction; Libya intervention; Syrian Civil War; Yemen…the list goes on! However despite these difficulties General Carter Ham said recently “I don’t think there is any question about what we are doing – we are winning battles” (Ham speaking at AFSAC Symposium) In other words no matter how complex or sensitive a mission may seem Army Chief Ray Odierno says “We can do things no one else can do because we have experience from World War II” This gives rise to another interesting facet to AFB Gift History - what different branches contribute differently towards achieving common goals? For example Aviation doesn't play nearly as big a role defensively anymore but doesullahidiversity contributor Special Operations Command contributes heavily both offensively and defensively
