Mountain Brook is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of Mobile County. Mountain Brook was named for Mount Brooke, an extinct volcano in nearby Baldwin County. Mountain Brook first came into existence as a hamlet on the edge of Mobile Bay, about two miles south of present-day Mountain Brook Station on the Atchafalaya River. In 1824, John Witherspoon and his family settled there and founded what would become MountainBrook Station (later known as MountainBrook). In 1827, James Fenton purchased the land aroundpresent-day Mountain Brook Station from John Witherspoon and renamed it "Mountainbrook". In 1830, Isaac Shelby bought property east of present-day Mountain Brook Station from John Fenton and named it "Shelbyville". He built a log cabin there which still stands today. The first school in mountain brook was built in this area by Reverend Hosea Stevens on October 15th, 1830. Reverend Stevens taught school until he died in 1834. In 1840, George Stephenson erected a sawmill at present-day Battle Creek near present-day Cottonwood Road/Route 611 to produce lumber for new homes being built along Interstate 10 southwest of Mobile. After years of growth and development at Battle Creek Workshops until 1861 when it became an engineering college under Birmingham University with its own mill complex adjacent to the college campus - during that time cotton mills were being produced all over Inner Tennessee - production at Cottonwood Road stopped completely because rails had to be moved across the river to reach it from downtownMobile due to flooding caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 - after that event many residents decided not to rebuild their homes near where they used to work because railroads had replaced them

It was named for Mountain Brook, a tributary of the Potomac River that flows through Montgomery and other counties. The first post office in Mountain Brook opened in 1885. In 1903, the community moved from its original location to what is now its current location on US-411 east of I-565. Mountain Brook has been host to many events important to Montgomery County's history including the inauguration of President George Washington on April 30, 1789; the first national football championship game between college teams (the Princeton Tigers and Harvard Crimson) on October 6, 1889; and speeches by Presidents James Buchanan and Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. In recent years, Mountain Brook has become known as an "austere" suburban community with few restaurants or shopping options available within close proximity to residents. However, it still retains some of the characteristics that have made it a popular place to live and raise children - excellent schools and close access to public transportation make it easy to get around without having to leave your home base
