Northport is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Northport is located on the Gulf Coast and bordered by the Mobile Bay to the south and east, Choctawhatchee Bay to the north, and Holmes County to the west. The first permanent European settlers in what would become Northport were two men from Scotland who came to Mobile Bay in 1796. They named their new land "Bayou Ridge" after a ridge in Perthshire, Scotland which they had seen while traveling down that bay. The first few years were difficult for these men because of lack of food and water resources; but with help from friends and family, they began farming land around 1802. In 1827, local farmers formed a corporation known as "Alabama Agricultural Society". This society helped improve soil health by planting trees and other crops; founded schools; built roads; collected taxes;and provided insurance for farmers In 1840, Abraham Hartsfield bought 640 acres (2 km2) of land southeast of downtown Northport from John Wise purchase for $1 per acre (0 gdp). He started building Hartsfield Bluff into an early 20th century tobacco plantation that would produce over 350 million pounds (14 kg) of tobacco between 1912-2014 On December 1st 1888 Andrew Wills became one thousandth white person to be born within Alabama when he crossed into this state from Georgia In 1965 community activist Reva Goolsbee organized a boycott campaign against Montgomery's segregated lunch counter system called "Operation Breadbasket". Northport, Alabama is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It was founded by General John Coffee in 1827 as a small community on the shore of Mobile Bay. Coffee moved his family to Northport in 1829 and began construction of a sawmill there which became the first commercial mill in the area. In 1830, Northport became home to its first white schoolhouse and cotton gin. The town's growth continued during the early 19th century with an influx of slaves from Georgia and other states as cotton production increased in Alabama. In 1837, Congress passed the Second National Census which found that Northport had a population of 2,846 people. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on Mobile Bay and its access to commerce including both maritime and agricultural interests. By 1860, Northport had reached its peak with a population of 5,913 people living in 281 businesses located along Third Street between Constitution Avenue and Pratt Street.
