It should be noted that while much has changed since then - Downtown NorthPort retains much of its early 20th century feel with brick buildings lining Market Street - some fundamental aspects have not changed such as access to public transportation through buses or cars from Union Station located just east off Bennett Street across I-565 from Downtown NorthPort proper

In 1837, the town had a population of just seven people. But by 1840, it had grown to twenty-six residents. In 1847, the town had two stores and one post office. In 1861, when Alabama became a state, Northport became its second city. It had a population of fifty-two people. In 1867, the city built its first hall and schoolhouse.
