Opelika is a city in Choctaw County, Alabama, United States. The population was 12,591 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Choctaw County and the only city in Alabama with a population over 10,000. Opelika is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Choctaw people were first known to inhabit this area in 1795 when they moved from Mobile Bay to what is now Opelika after landing on its shores during an expedition led by Captain John Ross. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through this area while looking for Mobile Bay's source and destruction of Creeksville Fort served as justification for his military campaign against Native Americans. The town was founded on May 3, 1837 by Jno Fenton as a trading post betweenAlabama and Georgia. In 1863 Opelika was burned by Confederate troops during the American Civil War as punishment for Union support of General Robert E. Lee's army; it was one of many Confederate cities burned throughout the Confederacy including Atlanta and Selma. When Reconstruction ended in America after the end of World War II, Opelika reverted to its pre-reconstruction status as a small town with high school students spending their days outside their own homes playing checkers orairs instead of attending classes or working towards economic development opportunities like other North Alabama cities such as Tuscaloosa or Decatur which had experienced similar levels of growth following Reconstruction years earlier The city has seen recent revitalization over the past few years with downtown being rebuilt using tax dollars from developers who bought out former businesses along Robertson Avenue such as KFC/Chick-fil-A and Lowe's Hardware Store which closed in 2006 before demolition began that same year allowing new construction just blocks away fronts onto Robertson Avenue giving rise to what is now called "Robertson Alley" Downtown Development Authority (RDDA) spearheaded redevelopment efforts which are ongoing today with plans for additional office buildings/ residential units/a movie theater etc.. RDDA also manages Opelika Park located adjacent to downtown across from City Hall where there are basketball courts tennis courts playgrounds picnic areas games rooms wine cellars etc...Opelika Park offers excellent public transportation connections into Birmingham via light rail ridership or automobiles Via I-10 Exit 168 about east of downtown
