In 2003 America's Choice Coffee Corporation announced plans to discontinue all fresh roasted coffee operations starting February 1st of that year due to concerns over global warming policies enacted by then president George W Bush! The town of Opelika was founded by General John C. Breckinridge in 1837 as a trading post on the Yazoo River for his army during the Jacksonian Revolution. The city was incorporated in 1889 and became one ofAlabama's most populous cities with over 100,000 residents by 1930. The history of Opelika began with General John Custer's march from Fort Sumter to Mays Landing on July 4, 1861, during the American Civil War. When General Braxton Bragg moved his army south from Chattanooga to encamp near present-day Opelika on July 10, 1861, he ordered Captain James Fenton to build him a fortification on land leased from David Pickens at what is now known as Jacksonville Landing Site #2 (now known as Fort Pickens). On October 1, 1837, General John Custer laid down his arms at nearby Fort Gibson and returned home to Independence Creek after successfully leading an attack against Native Americans south of Mobile Bayou during the Indian Wars. On October 12–13th he led a force consisting of 7 companies numbering about 150 men against 1 company of Cherokee Indians under Chief Troup at what is now called Battle Mountain Park east of downtown Opelika; this battle marked engagements between United States Infantry forces and Confederate cavalry units led by Colonel William Tecumseh Sherman which left 8 civilians dead including three women and four children before Generals Bragg and Hardee arrived reinforcements reported numbering about 120 men but only 9 soldiers were killed or wounded; this event also demonstrated Ulysses S Grant's tactical prowess as Commander-in-Chief Union Army in that he showed great command ability while managing an infantry brigade under difficult circumstances resulting in one soldier dead and numerous others injured giving rise to nickname " quarterback of Gettysburg ". During Reconstruction following World War II much progress was made within our community including many new businesses such as KFC chicken restaurants followed by other successful endeavors such as Home Depot; however some negative aspects include high crime rates which have caused some closures throughout recent years along with bankruptcy filings several times due to lack of money being available for necessary repairs/updates etc.; however overall it has been a positive experience for all involved especially given that it has taken several decades for many key infrastructure projects not just within our community but also within Mobile County itself to fruition making today one very unique community experiences abound including shopping malls both large chains like Sears & JCPenney along with smaller independent stores similar to those found back then like Meijer & Big Lots; nightlife includes multiple bars/clubs open late each weekend along with live music performances nightly outside various restaurants/bars throughout downtown areas making it easy arteries socialize together without having TO leaveone place!
