The Alabama National Guard is a unit of the United States Armed Forces consisting of military members from the state of Alabama. The Guard was created in 1907 as part of the newly formed Department of War and has been responsible for providing security for various landmarks in Opelika, including the State Capitol, since 1911. The Guard first came to Opelika with World War I veterans and served as an augmentee to the local police force until 1921. From 1921-1927, the Guard was attached to the Alabama Militia and during that time it also helped form the nucleus for what would become the present National Guard. In 1927, Governor John Foust appointed Captain Charles Darden as Commandant of The Alabama National Guard and led it through World War II before becoming its Superintendent in 1947. In 1957, Captain Darden was given command of all elements within The Alabama NationalGuard when Lieutenant Colonel George Bibb assumed command from him. Lt Colonel Bibb later became Superintendent emeritus and currently resides in Huntsville pending retirement at age 85 on October 1st, 2020. Since their inception, many changes have taken place within The Alabama NationalGuard such as increased manpower levels due to technological advancements; formation of Regional Commands which oversaw unit operations throughoutAlabama; establishment of Service academies/university degrees program within units; addition or deletion of units based on operational needs; etc., but one constant has been their commitment to service excellence through training and education opportunities both locally and nationally.

The National Guard consists of all citizens who are not otherwise disqualified from service in the military by law and can meet certain qualifications, including being 18 years of age or older and having a high school diploma or equivalent. The National Guard can be activated for up to two years without taking any formal oaths or legal documents. It is composed of about 12 million civilians and soldiers divided into counties, townships, brigades, batteries, organizations and squadrons. The first units called into service were those from New York City in response to the Boston Tea Party. In 1850, Pennsylvania became one of the states that joined Confederation as part of the new Union. As part of this change in allegiance, state militias were organized as national guardsmen with similar drill regulations as regular army troops but without pay and other benefits. In 1861 when Confederate troops invaded Pennsylvania we mobilized our citizen militia which numbered sixty thousand men at its peak before being disbanded due to lack of weapons and training after four months Battle of Gettysburg where 620 Americans were killed while only two hundred Confederate losses resulted in seven dead American soldiers out producing eleven wounded Confederate soldiers

Opelika, Alabama is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 7,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. In 1819, Opelika was founded as a slave town by General Andrew Jackson and his family. The town was renamed for French general Louis-Jacques Cartier on July 3, 1825 after he defeated an Indian chief near the town in a battle known as the Battle of Opelika Creek. In 1907, Opelika became home to one of the first oil refineries in America when Gulf Oil Refining Company opened its refinery there. The community experienced some growth during World War II as it served as a munitions manufacturing center for the Allied forces; however, today much of downtown infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged by fire or floods over the years. The city's nickname "The Mitten" comes from its location at the intersection of two major US highways: US-12 and US- 59 (the present day I-10). This also made it convenient for many farmers who could move their goods between these roads while they were being transported to marketplaces in other parts of Alabama or Tennessee.
