Opelika, Alabama is a small town in the Gulf Coast region of Alabama. It is located on the Opelika River, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Mobile and 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Birmingham. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. The first European to enter what is now Opelika was John Ledbetter in 1827. He established a trading post here with his brother-in-law James Gadsden. By 1830, Opelika had a population of 350 people and goods were being traded by boat from Mobile Bay. In 1838, Confederate General Robert Ewell came here looking for troops to help him attack Union forces atMobile Bay Bridge. He found no one here but set up shop in an old cabin until he could find more suitable quarters near Mobile. The town prospered under its new name of "Opelika" which means "place where trees grow." A post office was established in 1849, and by 1861 it had reached its present size with a population of 1,500 people. The first school was built in 1850 and classes began on October 5 that year. A grocery store opened soon afterwards and became a mainstay of the community’s economy until 1948 when it closed due to World War II shortages of food items caused by the war. In 1949 the school building burned down so a new one was built adjacent to it which remains standing today as part of the town square Restoration Project spearheaded by Mayor Leroy Kuykendall Jr.. When white flight began to occur throughout most southern United States during the late 1940s/early 1950s many residents chose to move away from rural areas into larger cities or suburban developments such as Birmingham or Selma because those communities had more job opportunities than their predecessors did within commuting distance for those who wanted them – especially after Oppelfka’s close proximity to major metropolitan areas helped encourage this trend even further among some locals who saw themselves as “ northerners Aristocrats” seeking escape from poverty back east while also enjoying access to all sorts of amenities available only southward like shopping centers with big box stores closer than they would have been able to take care of on their own doorstep given similar economic conditions back east; yet they remained pretty much stationary long term within their city limits nonetheless
Opelika was founded in 1871 by John Opel and his brother-in-law, George Stephenson. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Alabama River and its access to timber, transportation, and mining interests. By 1902, Opelika had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1911, Opelika became a city after voters passed an ordinance approving the incorporation of the city. A year later, the city annexed the adjacent community of Highland.
