The present Administration Building was built on top of the old Headquarters Building and opened in 1976. The name Oxford comes from Old English Oocenburgh meaning "the place where oxen are herded." In 1827, James Covington, an American lawyer and planter, bought land about two miles south of present-day Oxford for $10 per acre. He named his new land Oxon because he had seen an ox being driven away from a field near his plantation by another farmer. Covington donated this land to the University of Alabama in 1919 as part of a bequest from his wife's father. The first students at the university lived on campus in rented rooms until 1923 when they moved into their own buildings.
