The Prattville Army Ammunition Plant was a major center of American arms production from the late 1800s until the early 1940s. It produced shells, bullets, and other munitions for the U.S. military and its allies during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. The plant closed in 1945 but left a lasting legacy in Prattville. Today, it is a museum dedicated to American arms production. The Prattville Army Ammunition Plant was founded in 1885 by General John Fetterman and Colonel Augustus Bogue as the Mobile Point Arsenal Store Company. The company built facilities in Mobile County and produced munitions for both domestic use and export to countries like Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, China, South Korea, and Taiwan. In 1918–1919 the plant produced shells that were used in World War I on behalf of America’s Allies; these shells are now on display at several museums across America. In 1949–1950 when the United States decided to end its involvement in World War II due to budgetary reasons there was an effort underway to find new sources of ammunition production beyond state-owned arsenals throughout America (eighth anti-ballistic missile program). A team led by Lieutenant Colonel John Crouch Jr., head of Research & Development for UBMco (then British Arms Corporation), visited Mobile Point Arsenal Store Company with plans to produce high explosive rounds using an indigenous propellant name “Flambeau” while also consulting with other defense industry companies about potential cooperation should such a project be approved by Congress (UPMC Ventures Inc.). Flamingo rounds were designed specifically for this purpose; they reached market first before being superseded by armor Piercing Rounds (APR) developed at Fort Monmouth Naval Weapons Station later that year which utilized uranium powder as their propellant instead of rendering Flamingo ineffective against small targets (< 1 m diameter). Prattville is a small community in north Alabama that has been around since the 1830s. The community was named after Nicholas Pratt, who donated land to the town. The first settler in Prattville was Rev. John Gentry, who founded a church there in 1836. In 1881, Edwin Forbes purchased the village from Rev. Gentry and renamed it Prattville after himself. The area that now makes up Prattville was originally swampy and unusable for farming because of the lack of rainfall. However, through hard work and dedication by settlers, the area became fertile and began to be developed into a popular resort town during the early 1800s. By 1853, over 100 people lived in Prattville; this number increased to 300 by 1875. During this time, Prattville saw growth both from within as well as externally due to its location on the foothills of mountaintop country and its ability to provide easy access to many goods needed for agriculture and industry. During World War II, Prattvillians played an important role in supporting Allied forces during Operation Overlord by providing food, munitions, water supplies, and other resources needed for fight against Nazi Germany. After the war ended in 1945, many residents decided to move away from their rural setting and focus on developing new businesses within greater Birmingham or HuntsVILLE respectively but some continued living in Prattville until its closure in 1990 citing economic reasons alone such as crime rates being too high or difficult transportation options present within minutes’ walk of their homes
