The Prattville Coffee Company was founded in 1906 by George H. Pratt and his wife, Anna. The company made its first coffee beans in the town of Prattville. In 1916, the company became a co-operative. In 1937, the company merged with the Birmingham Coffee Company to form the Prattville Coffee Corporation. The corporation continued to make coffee until it closed in 1984.
Prattville is a city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,826 at the 2010 census. It began as a small agricultural community and today it is an important economic center in the region. Prattville has a variety of businesses including heavy industry such as aluminum production and homebuilders, light industry such as restaurant and hotel catering, medical devices and equipment manufacturing, aircraft manufacturing, and other smaller businesses. The city is also known for its annual Christmas parade which features floats made from all different types of materials including wood (which can be seen during the parade), cloth (which can be seen during the parade), rubber (which is used to create realistic toy cars), cheese (used to make candy canes), balloons, and more. Prattville was originally named "Johnstown" after John Pratt who settled in the area in 1819. At first there were only two homes in Prattville- one by John Pratt himself and one by his brother Ebenezer. In 1827 James Worthy built the first school building on what is now Broadway Street. By 1850 when the town was incorporated it had a population of about 100 people but by 1870 it had grown to over 300 people with a schoolhouse/laboratory complex that still stands today. The early settlers were primarily farmers with some landholdings in trade or mining operations along Alabama's riversides. The price of cotton kept rising until prices peaked around 1869; this caused many farmers to leave for better opportunities elsewhere on account of high costs associated with feedstock transportation and marketing expenses alone swamping their profits even while basic needs like water storage improved markedly throughout much of America at this time due to advances in railroads and refrigeration technology). In 1870, an iron works was built in Prattville and soon became one of the largest businesses on Franklin County's Gulf Coast. During this time, Prattville also became known as "The Cotton Capital of Alabama." In 1881, an electric streetcar line was constructed through Prattville and it quickly became one of the most popular transportation methods for residents of this small town. This development helped increase traffic congestion on US Route 431 which ran through downtown Prattvill
