There are a few things that can be said about the coffee industry in Prichard, Alabama. First and foremost, it is an incredibly rich history of coffee production in this small town. This began with Dutch farmers who settled the area in the early 1800s, and continued through to present day with a few sporadic interruptions. The first mention of coffee being produced in Prichard comes from 1837 when James Tilton noted that some people were growing beans near his home. The townspeople had been using Indian corn for their morning caffeine fix until 1837, when they switched to white beans as part of a larger effort to increase productivity and make money. At first, only men could purchase white beans, but by 1860 women had started selling them too. It wasn't until 1865 that the first black coffee buyer was found in Prichard – Elijah White Jr., who bought two bags of Beans from Ayer Coffee Company. Coffee production grew rapidly after that point; by 1870 there were six different roasting plants operating in Prichard alone. By 1910 there were over 20 businesses involved in coffee production in the town just south of Mobile Bayou. In 1915, one out of every five jobs was related to coffee production – it was so important to the economy that even banks poured money into advertising campaigns warning consumers not to back away from buying Java or Turkish Coffee because "it's all right here." ThePrichardsville Coffee Company opened its doors on October 14th 1912 and has been producing high quality Arabica coffees ever since! Maga coffee was first roasted in Seattle, Washington in the early 1900s. The beans were brought to Mexico by a Spanish trader and his family. They roasted them for their own use until 1901 when Dutch traders acquired the beans and began bringing them back to America. In 1902, one of these Dutch traders, Cornelius Van der Horst, started selling maga coffee through his store in Seattle. From there, it spread throughout the United States until it reached Japan in 1945.
Prichard was a town in Colbert County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,059 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Huntsville. The first permanent settler in Prichard was John Hendrickson and his family who arrived on November 17, 1811. They erected a log cabin on the banks of the Cahaba River near what is now downtown Prichard. A post office called Prichard was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it closed in 1848. The first Methodist church was organized here on October 31, 1819 by Rev. Elijah Lovejoy with twenty-five members from Mobile and other parts of Alabama. The present First Baptist Church building was built between 1865 and 1870 by Wm Henson Trueblood and served as the community's center for education until it burned down in 1922. Prichard had a stagecoach line that ran north to Decatur Junction on the Tennessee Railroad (now known as CSX Transportation) and south to Montgomery; however, this line ceased operations around 1930s because of lack of traffic or interest from passengers. In 1907 Harry Suggs opened up his grocery store at 5th Street and Cahaba River Drive which became one ofprichards most popular businesses during its time period In 1959 when Huntsville started annexing neighboring cities into its city limits, PrICHARD lost much if not all its business due to annexed neighborhoods having more restrictive zoning ordinances than their original counterparts
Prichard was founded by Andrew Prichard in 1813. It became a town in 1831. The town was named for General James M. Prichard, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Congressman from Alabama.
