Scottsboro is a small town in Barbour County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,788 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Barbour County. The Scottsboro Boys were accused of raping two white women on December 14, 1955, in Scottsboro, Alabama. The men had been drinking and were driving their car when they allegedly raped one of the women. They were found guilty and sentenced to death after a three-day trial in February 1956. Despite strong protests from local citizens and national organizations such as the National Council for Negro Women (NCNW), the death sentences were carried out by a firing squad without further hearings or public comment. Despite international condemnation of the trial and calls for clemency, all six men still died in prison under mysterious circumstances at age 28 years old—the youngest being 22 years old at the time of his execution. In 1958, an appellate court upheld all six men's convictions and sentences while finding that there was no scientific evidence linking them to crime beyond intoxication at the time of their alleged crimes. In 1962–1966 five additional Scottsboro Boys were tried but only one verdict was returned; he too received a firing squad sentence without further proceedings being held due to lack of evidence
