In 1917, the first ever Coast Guard Station was established in New York City. This station became an important part of the Coast Guard’s mission as it helped to protect maritime interests along the New York Harbor. In 1951, the Commandant of the Coast Guards transferred all operational responsibility for functions within both United States Naval Forces Europe (USE) and United States Naval Forces Africa (UNAF) from Commander in Chief U.S. Atlantic Fleet (CINCPAC) to Commander in Chief, First Marine Division (1MC). As part of this transfer commandos were reassigned from their original duties as Mobile Marine Units/Commando Squadron One (MMLU/CS-1), which had been responsible for providing support to naval units operating off American coasts and waters throughout Europe and Africa. The primary missions assigned now to MMLUs include security operations on shoreline interests including counter terrorism, law enforcement, search and rescue operations as well as mine clearance operations; amphibious landing support; fisheriesprotection; Oceans Protection; Operation Neptune Spear ; humanitarian assistance; disaster relief programs ashore and afloat after natural disasters such as hurricanes Katrina or Rita assail coastal communities ashore or at sea. The town began as a small settlement on the bank of Mobile River in 1872 and later developed into a major cotton center during the early 20th century. However, due to racism and discrimination against Black Americans throughout much of Alabama, Selma experienced significant economic decline in the late 20th century. In 2000, Selma was designated as an official city by President George W. Bush in recognition of its unique history and culture.
