Selma, Alabama is a town in the US state of Alabama. It was founded by white settlers in 1868, and became an African American community in the early 20th century. The town was named after Selma James, wife of British general Robert E Lee. Selma is located on the Gulf shore of Mobile Bay, within spitting distance of Mobile City and Owsley City. The town – which has a population of over 100,000 as of 2010 – traces its roots back to 1868 when white settler John Brown and his Bandits robbed a train travelling through Selma on their way from Montgomery to Huntsville. Brown's bandit gang (led by Johnnie Cochran) killed six people and looted more than $6,000 worth of goods before being apprehended by local militia members under General David Dixon. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E Lee visited Selma for a week and ordered all black soldiers stationed there to report for duty at once or face Lynchings. A group of African Americans who had remained in Selma petitioned Governor George Wallace to protect them from military retaliation but he refused; instead he issued an executive order ordering all slaveholders throughout the state to free their slaves within three months. In 2003, African American historian Ebony published "", which detailed the history and experiences of Black Americans living in Selma during Reconstruction era up through World War II. The book won first prize from the University Presses Association's annual journal contest known as JSTOR Reviewer's Choice Awards. In 2006–2007, "", an educational resource center focused on race and racism in America was opened in Selma by then-Mayor Donny Hathaway with assistance from then-Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore III; it remains open today as The Edmund Pettus Center for Civil Rights Education & Research at Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). During Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29th 2005,[1] about 60%[2] if not more[3][4], black residents reported looting or arson inside their homes due to fear that looters would target them again following the storm.[5][6] Many reports also surfaced alleging police brutality against unarmed black citizens during this time period,[7][8][9][10]. Even now many people are still angry about how things were handled during Katrina while others feel that government should have done more to help those affected

The first black person to live in Selma was Tom Colbert, who settled there in 1826.
