The United States Army was founded in 1775, and it has been present in Troy, Alabama since that time. The first soldiers to enter the area were part of the Continental army. It wasn't until 1814 that a regiment of infantry was organized in Troy and named the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment. As the war continued on, more troops were needed so a battalion of artillery was formed in 1821. The 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment was redesignated as the 7th Alabama Infantry Regiment on November 15, 1865. The regiment was disbanded on September 9,1866 when all its members were mustered out. The Army National Guard traces its origins back to 1903 when it was established as a provisional organization under President Theodore Roosevelt’s Department of War Order No. 10991. On July 5, 1907, it became an permanent organization within the Army under General John J.[e] Pershing’s Executive Order No. 11191. National Guard units have served throughout World War II; however their largest deployment came during Korea Conflict where they accounted for over 50% of all military activity in South Korea[citation needed]. Currently there are over 63 thousand active duty National Guardsmen serving our country[dubious – discuss].

The town was a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War, and its citizens played a significant role in helping to ensure that Confederate General Robert E. Lee did not cross the state line into Union territory to fight against President Abraham Lincoln. After the war, many residents moved away from Troy due to economic reasons, but few left their memories behind. In 1978, Mayor Fred Baughman designated July 4th as Troy's annual anniversary commemoration of its founding and local history. Today, the town is home to a small population of historical preservationists who are working to keep both its buildings and culture alive.
