Troy is a small city in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,818 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. Troy is located on the eastern side of the state and bordered by Auburn to the north, Marengo to the east, and Colbert County to the south. The city's location makes it an important commercial center for both rural and urban areas in Tuscaloosa and surrounding counties. The first people to settle in what is now Troy were farmers who arrived between 1810 and 1830. They grew corn, wheat, hay, oats and other crops on land that later became part of present-day Tuscaloosa County. A post office called Troy was established in 1836, but it was discontinued in 1852 because there were no residents living in it. In 1859, a group of men from Huntsville formed a town association which began developing business opportunities for residents of Troy. That same year saw the opening of the first school building in what would become Troy – a log cabin used as a school house until 1902 when it was replaced by a more modern structure which still stands today. In 1865–1966, Augustus Flowers served as mayor of Troy after being elected unopposed during local elections held that year following Reconstruction following America'sCivil War effort. During Flowers' term as mayor, many new businesses were constructed or opened within downtown Troy including one brickyard where soft drinks are still made today (Coca Cola). Although flowers never ran for office again after leaving office due to health concerns (he had tuberculosis), he remains popularly remembered as one of its earliest mayors—and also for his role model for future mayors throughout central Alabama! Today's downtown area contains several large mall stores (JCPenney & Sears), several restaurants/bars/cafes (including Dunkin' Donuts & Starbucks) as well as several sheriff's departments with stations located throughout downtown including Patrolman First Class Phillip Reeves' department located across from Macy's department store on Main Street; Headquarters District - currently home to all law enforcement activity related to traffic stop investigations; corner near Coliseum Avenue & North Boulevard - currently home to ExxonMobil headquarters; Pioneer Place - once housing two grocery stores operated by Hometown Grocery Co.; current day Rotary Clubhouse built on original stadium site which housed Agricultural Hall before that facility burned down December 10th 1978; Railroad Depot Square - home of many cultural events over its years including concerts by country music artists such as Dolly Parton & Willie Nelson™; three large shopping centers just outside town: One anchored by JCPenney® with anchor tenants Sears and Kmart®, another anchored by Barnes& Noble®, while another anchors Kroger ® . Downtown also includes numerous parks such as Park View Park near Interstate 5 Exit 248; Asphalt Plaza just south off I-5 exit 248 on State Route 246 opposite Walmart ® ; new park built adjacent Lake Allatoona just west off I-5 exit 256 called "Lake Allatoona Parkway" created through citizen donations .
