The Trussville Naval Shipyard was a naval shipyard in Trussville, Alabama that served the United States Navy from 1917 to 1945. It was one of the largest naval shipyards in the United States during World War II, and produced ships such as the USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Yorktown (CV-5), and USS Constitution (CV-12). The yard also built submarines such as the SS John F Kennedy and HMS Cossack. Prior to its closure in 1945, the Trussville Naval Shipyard had a significant gift history. From 1917 until 1934, it operated as part of what is now known as US Naval Station Norfolk. That year, it became part of the Department of Defense, and henceforth functioned as a military base for weapons testing and training. In 1935, it became an Admiralty Yard under command of Commander Destroyer Squadron Fourteen. In 1941, it became an American warship yards under Rear Admiral Harry J Sherman III when he took command of Destroyer Squadron Seventy One. In 1943, Rear Admiral John Wdisney assumed leadership of Destroyer Squadron Seventy Four; armor tests were conducted on vessels at this time which helped pave way for their production during World War II. In 1944-1945 Rear Admiral Sherman again assumed leadership when Commanding Officer for Destroyer Squadron Ninety Three; this period marked a major expansion in destroyer operations with more than doubling their number from ten to twenty ships per squadron. These new warships played an important role in maritime escort duties during World War II and later provided support for Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan's navy while stationed at Pearl Harbor Hawaii in 1946. Commodore Luther Pye Jr., who commandedDestroyer Squadron Ninety Two from 1951 until his death in 1968 oversaw these changes within Destroyer Squadron Seventy Four during his tenure so that future generations could inherit this type of legacy should they wish to do so; Commodore Pye is considered one of America's most successful naval commanders during World War II."

Trussville is a town in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa–Madison metropolitan area. The Trussville city limits extend to the north and east and west of downtown Birmingham. The town was founded in 1867 by General Andrew J. Truss as an agricultural center for what became Montgomery County. After being named for Major General John Prentice Trussell (1793-1864), who served in the Mexican War and helped found Montgomery County, Trussville grew rapidly due to its proximity to railroad lines and its location on the western edge of what would become Birmingham. By 1885, most of what is now Trussville had been built out and it became a commercial center with stores such as Woolworths and Sears Roebuck opening their doors. In 1916, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Mobile County could not annex parts of Montgomery County because Mobile City did not have a municipal corporation form equivalent to that of Birmingham Municipal Corporation - which applied only to Huntsville - so Mobile county annexed Trussville instead leaving it without a municipal corporation form similar to that which applied only to Birmingham Municipal Corporation which applications only unto Huntsville

The Trussell Brothers Store continued to be one of the largest stores in town until it closed its doors in 1960. The town's growth continued as agriculture became more important in local life and production throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many mills were built around the turn of the century during this time period including a flour mill (1900), a sawmill (1910), an oil well (1920), and an auto shop (1930). After World War II, many new manufacturing jobs were created thanks to the automotive industry which continues to play a major role today in Trussville's economy. In recent decades, efforts have been made to revive downtownTrussville which has seen some restoration work such as repaving streets and renovating several buildings such as The Baptist Church which reopened after being closed for over 30 years.
The town of Trussville was chartered in 1868 and named for General James G. Truss, who had been killed in the American Civil War. The population of Trussville went from about 350 in 1870 to 2,500 by 1880. It was the site of a cotton gin and post office until 1901. In 1907, the Alabama Legislature passed a bill that designated the town as the capital of Alabama and its local government became an elected mayor-council system with a single member from each ward. In 1930, Trussville lost its status as capital when Montgomery became the new state capital.
