The Tuskegee Airmen Association, Inc. (TAA) is the organization that has perpetuated the air force deployed gift tradition in Tuskegee, Alabama since 1944. The TAA was founded by Lieutenant Colonel Luther E. Cline and his wife, Mrs. Clara L. Cline to support military servicemen and women who have served in World War II and their families during the war years of 1945-1946. During World War II, African American men and women serving in the United States Air Force (USAF) participated in numerous campaigns throughout the South Pacific area as part of Operation Downfall. One such campaign wasOperation "Airlift". This operation saw RAF planes drop food supplies to Japanese forces stranded on New Guinea after Japan's invasion of that country on December 7th, 1943. Many Tuskegee Airmen were involved in this project as pilots or ground crew members. The RAF plane flew over Tuskegee every day for six weeks providing a daily supply of food for 1,500 troops at an altitude of 15,000 feet above sea level (including 3 days per week while stationed at Darwin Airport). During this time many Tuskegee Airmen received combat training with Australian Flying Tigers fighter aircraft which they used against Japan's fighter squadrons located outside of Tokyo City limits

In 1948, it was renamed Tuskegee Airmen Flying Training Center and became one of the first USAF bases to offer domestic undergraduate flying courses. It also served as home to the Black Belt Riders air demonstration squadron until its disbandment in 1969. In May 2006, it was announced that the Tuskegee Airmen Flying Training Center would be closed effective June 30, 2006 due to financial difficulties.
