Vestavia Hills is a city in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 24,585 at the 2010 census. Vestavia Hills is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Vestavia Hills is one of two cities in Alabama with a population over 25,000 and one of only a few cities in America with both an airport and a university. The name "Vestavia" comes from the Cherokee word "wahaadika", meaning "place where trees grow." In 1819, General Andrew Jackson's army camped outside of Vestavia Hills on what is now Woodward Avenue. When he withdrew his forces that night, his men left traces of their camp near the intersection of Calhoun Street and Valley Road today known as Fort McDowell National Monument. In 1892, jeweler Solomon Silverman set up shop on what are now Bakewell Avenue and Butler Boulevard in Vestavia Hill while he awaited construction of the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa Railroad line through town. The first store in what is now Vestavia Hills opened its doors on October 17th, 1893 - just three days after the opening of the railroad. By 1899 there were 12 stores open in Vestavia Hills with 300 customers per day! The city's growth was due to several factors - most notably its location at the junction of four major railroads: TheBirmingham-Tuscaloosa Railroad (1893), The Mobile & Ohio Railroad (1898), The Tennessee Central Railway (1902) – all providing transportation access to nearby towns and businesses. As these companies expanded their operations into new territory or relocated their headquarters elsewhere within Alabama or Georgia, so too did Vestavia Hills become an integral part not just of Birmingham but also Tuscaloosa and Huntsville! "It has been my great misfortune," wrote historian Hinton Carter about life during this time period "to witness some things which I could not possibly have experienced had I lived nearer to them." Somehow vestiges of those early years can still be seen today such as when you drive along Old Baldwin Highway towards Highland Park – once called BeltLine Road – past signs reading “Birmingham” until you reach mile marker 399A and then make your turn onto Midtown Boulevard; it was here that silverware pioneer Sol Silverman first set foot upon American soil 54 years ago! Vestsavians take pride in their history even though they may not always be able to experience it firsthand like many other Americans do! For example; many people know about how our city got its name from General Andrew Jackson’s visit back in 1819 but few realize we actually named our city after another person who visited less than two weeks later - Solomon Silverman! He opened up his very first store here right smack dab in Heritage Square – across from today’s old Beverly Center shopping center! It wasn’t until well into the 20th century that people started learning about all this history which makes vestavis so unique compared to other places throughout America!"

The Vestavia Hills community is located in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama. It was developed as a result of an agreement between the city and four counties in 1881. The area now known as Vestavia Hills was part of what was then Anniston County. In 1887, the citizens of Vestavia Hills voted to become a town, and on July 1, 1907, it became one of the first towns in Alabama to be incorporated under the laws of that state.
