The National Guard of El Mirage, AZ is one of the oldest national guard units in the United States. The unit was formed on December 15, 1935 with men from Pinal County, Arizona. The first unit was called the “Pine Trees†and served as a militia unit until 1938. On January 1, 1939, the regiment became an all-volunteer military organization and was redesignated as the “El Mirage National Guard Regiment #1â€. The regiment served during World War II as part of the Allied Expeditionary Force (AEF) and earned some distinction including being named Combat Infantry Battalion (CIB) for heroism in Normandy Campaign. After hostilities ended in 1945, elements of the regiment returned home to El Mirage where they were disbanded on July 1, 1946. On November 2, 1951, elements of El Mirage National Guard Regiment #2 were activated at Tucson Army Air Field under command of Commander Ninth Air Division Headquarters Troop I (HHC-9). This detachment served as an aerial scout squadron providing air reconnaissance for troop formations moving through central Arizona during Operation Dusty Roads whichidded key communication links between Phoenix and Tucson areas critical to defense against surprise raids by Japanese forces during the Korean War. By 1957 El Mirage had become a permanent seat for Ninth Air Division Headquarters Troop I at Tucson Army Air Field following its activation there from El Paso Army Air Base; however both detachments continued to use Tucson Army Air Field untilactivated on July 7th 1959 while stationed at Goodyear AFB near Phoenix; when they concurrently activated at nearby Fort Schulberg AFB effective September 9th 1959). In FY 1984 American Legion post 146 located adjacent to Ft Schulberg AFB donated land parcels totaling 6 acres forming what would become today's northwest side area around Soldier Road known officially as "National Guard Armory" or simply "NGA". This donation constituted over 50% of all future property donations made by American Legion posts along NW side since that time; making it one of only a few instances where a US Military installation has been permanentlyleased/ gifted to a civilian agency outside of Federal jurisdiction. NGA would come into use frequently throughout its history due variety assorted purposes including storing/managing equipment used by USAF retirees & their families upon their retirement from service (& later transition back into civilian life), hosting special events such as concerts by local bands & other musician invitees annually capped off with parade down Soldiers Road each year thereafter thru summer months ending Labor Day weekend; most recently hosting annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on New Year's Eve eve (since 2006). It should be noted that not every event hosted at NGA is open to public viewing concurrently across various DoD installations across America); often specific functions/programs run behind closed doors exclusively for troops & their families subsequent thereto! Assembling these items provides an excellent overview about how our nation's national guard units have interacted with each other over time while also shedding light on some unique aspects associated with this subset within our military community - specifically those relating to gifts received from civilians! While many gift recipients are well aware that their contribution has meaning beyond just giving something unwanted ornaments or mementos no longer worn ornaments which are usually given away free after death- numerous individuals may be surprised(or even unaware) when receiving something truly unique within their gift recipient's own personal funds!!!
