In 1867, when the Mexican–American War began, General Mariano Arroyo and his army invaded Tucson and took possession of what is now Florence. Arizonans fought on both sides of this war and many residents died as a result. In 1886, a post office was established in Florence with A.J. Hutton as its first ranger. The postal service served Florence until 1912 when it was replaced by the Arizona Territorial Railway (later Amtrak). The townspeople petitioned for incorporation in 1916 and received their charter from Pinal County on November 5th that same year. On July 4th of that year, their first election results were announced and they elected Arturo Montoya as their first mayor; he would serve until 1930 when incumbent Mayor John Waddell ran for reelection but lost to Harry Fenton . A new courthouse was built in 1928 which still stands today next to the elementary school across from the pumpkinshop! One interesting fact about this courthouse is that it has been used twice as a courtroom – once during World War II when military cases were tried and again during the 1984 Tucson Olympics when local residents organized an unsuccessful boycott of those events due to then-Governor Jan Brewer’s decision not to award tax breaks to nearby Tempe (the city hosting those Olympics). In 1992, after years of planning by then-Mayor Gary Locke, arsonists damaged most of the old courthouse while it sat unused outside; however, rebuilding happened soon afterwards and now serves as one of Florence’s most popular tourist destinations among locals and visitors alike!
