The Sedona Army National Guard was first organized on November 10, 1912 in the town of Sedona, Arizona. The unit traces its origins to the First Defense Force Act of 1911 which authorized the creation of a military police force within the US territory of Arizona. The act also provided for the enlistment of civilian volunteers to help with law enforcement duties. On December 8, 1912, Captain John Fenton and three enlisted men from the First Defense Force Patrol Company arrived at Fort Sill in Oklahoma Territory to begin their new job. Soon afterwards, Captain Fenton's battalion joined forces with units from other states in order to form an all-volunteer army brigade under Colonel Edward M. Haggerty. In 1916, after World War I ended and hostilities ceased in Europe, the Sedona Brigade became an infantry regiment and was redesignated as 4th Infantry Division on February 15th following mobilization for World War II. On July 20th 1944 President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor and war was declared between America and Japan. On September 2nd 1945 General Douglas MacArthur reported that Japanese forces remained active inside US territorial waters so on September 5th he ordered all troops back into their original positions throughout Asia while simultaneously dividing up troops into theater commands including 4th Infantry Division which was stationed in California; 3rd Infantry Division headquartered in Texas; 1st Infantry Division located in New York City; 9th Armored Cavalry Regiment located near Tokyo; 11th Airborne Division Headquarters at Guam; 12th Air Fleet Headquarters at Hiroshima; Philippine Islands headquarters command Detachment One (Two) (Task Group Seventeen). In total there were over 100 divisions engaged in combat across four theaters during World War II. FollowingWorld War II,4thsedonna Brigade transitioned into a reserve unit until it was disbanded on October 14 th 1946 when "the United States Army" reverted back to its original name "Army National Guard". These people gathered firewood near present day Cottonwood Heights before settling near where Interstate 10 bisects today's cityscape on its eastern border—an important transportation hub for mining operations in what are now southeastern Arizona counties during much of this time period. In 1912 when these pioneers arrived in what is now Sedona Valley they found rich deposits of coal but no gold or other valuable minerals so they supplemented their income with raising cattle which brought them more sustenance than money back home until World War II when San Francisco began shipping goods via land route across Arizona into California without any attempt at trade or commerce resulted in an influx of people seeking out beautiful areas like Phoenix then Tucson then finally Sedono only making a stop here at Fort McDowell before continuing downriver New Mexico’s Rio Grande Estuary called El Paso which had been explored by Spanish missionaries two centuries earlier while not yet under Mexican control
