In the early 1900s, a small community of farmers and ranchers called Surprise settled in what is now the town of Surprise. The area was part of the Mogollon Rim country and was rich in minerals and fossils. So, when the townsite was surveyed for a post office in 1907, it wasn’t hard to see why there were so few residents. But that didn’t stop those who wanted to get their hands on some of the best coffee beans around from traveling long distances to find them. One such person was James Fenton, who started roasting his own coffee at his home in 1912. At this time, coffee wasn’t as common as it is today, but Fenton knew how to get the most out of his beans. His roastings were unique andDemand for his beans grew so great that he decided to open a store himselfIn 1916 he opened a second store near downtown Surprise. By 1922, both stores had grown too large for Fenton to run alone, so he partnered with Wm. Haggerty Sr., another local farmer and business man who owned an adjacent farmhouse where they roasted their coffee under one roof until 1935. By 1939, two more stores had been added – one on Main Street in downtown Surprise and one at 12th Avenue South in Round Rock (later renamed Austin Boulevard). It wasn’t long before word got out about this amazing fresh-roasted coffee available only from these two stores. People from all over came down to experience this wonderful flavor for themselves! The town of Surprise was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1867 as a short-lived settlement on the banks of the Gila River. The first post office in Surprise opened on October 3, 1868. By 1870, there were 12 stores and two hotels in town. In 1886, Surprise had a population of 756 inhabitants and developed into an agricultural center with 450 acres (200 hectares) of land irrigated by the Gila River. In 1912, whenArizona became a state, Surprise became its capital. The first state capitol building was built at Ninth Street and Washington Avenue; it burned down in 1916. The first people to arrive in Surprise were the Pima, who came here in 1867. The American soldiers who invaded Arizona in 1912 found this area still unpopulated and decided to establish a military post here. After World War I, the United States government turned its attention back to Arizona after it became part of the new America. A group of men led by George Sountrack began exploration of what is now Surprise on behalf of the US government in 1927. They named their small town Surprise after General John Sountrack, commander of US forces in Mexico during the Harding administration.
