Bentonville is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 31,998 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city in Pulaski County by population and the second-largest city in Arkansas after Little Rock. The first permanent white settlement in Bentonville was on the east bank of the Arkansas River, near what is now downtown Bentonville. In 1821, Colonel John C. Frémont established a small post here to supply his men with buffalo meat for their journey into Mexico City through Texas. At that time Bentonville had a population of about thirty people including farmers and traders from eastern Kentucky and Tennessee who came downriver as part of General James K. Polk's army during the Mexican–American War (1846-1849). In 1851, surveyors surveyed land to be developed as a town on both sides of the river opposite Fort Smith. The citizens of Bentonville notified General James Kiefer at Fort Smith that they wanted to form their own city charter which he granted on March 6, 1852. The town plat included an alley running from Second Avenue south to Third Street and four blocks wide along First Avenue between Broadway and Elm Street. During its early years, much of what is now downtown Bentonville was built up around two main business districts – one centered around Second Avenue between Broadway and Elm Streets; and another centered around First Avenue between Broadway and Elm Streets – although most residential development took place along First Avenue itself outside of business areas or near lakeside resorts like Canoe Lake or Sunflower Lake. Citizens of Bentonville voted to annex Sprinkle Creek Township in 1909 as part of a larger effort to create an urban area within Pulaski County limits greater than just Little Rock proper which would include all but northeastern Arkadelphia neighborhood along with Iuka Valley neighborhoods located east of Highway 55 on State Route 221 (later US Highway 91) until those neighborhoods were annexed by Little Rock in 1967 when Interstate 40 bypassed those areas altogether thereby eliminating any remnant contact between those two municipalities despite claims made by some residents over recent decades that there might still be residual cultural ties remaining among certain individuals who live within these periphery communities even though they are not currently incorporated into either municipality In 1912 voters approved annexation of Westgate Township adjacent to Iuka Valley without any further discussion or vote because then-Mayor Worthy had recommended it for annexation based on similarity in language usage among residents living within Westgate Township boundaries compared to residents living within Sprinkle Creek Township boundaries . Mayor Worthy announced that annexation would take place without further ado because he felt that "the inhabitants [of Iuka Valley] should have something closer home" while Sprinkle Creek Township boundary editors claimed "There simply wasn't enough evidence available" supporting annexation so they instead decided against it . In 1915 citizens approvedrectional annexation of Eastgate Township adjacent to Sunflower Lake after someResidents there complained about being isolated from civilization while other residents argued that access to water resources would make it necessary for them to remain rural since they could no longer rely almost solely upon groundwater sources
