Polk visited and named it for the gold discovery at California's Sierra Nevada that year by American miner John C. Fremont. In 1861, General Nathaniel Banks marched his army from Memphis through central Arkansas into Mexico and then up to Santa Fe where he stationed his army with orders to find new sources of gold and silver ore in New Mexico Territory before moving on to Arizona Territory (at this time called Arizona) In 1862, Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Central Arkansas as commander of Union forces during the Mexican-American War On November 7th 1862 General Grant accepted an offer from Governor James Fenton of Macon County — an opportunity to lead an expedition against Confederate raiders raiding Indian tribes near Fort Smith in what is now Marshall County — which would become known as “the Black Canyon Expedition” On December 10th 1862 General Grant left Central Arkansas for Moberly Barracks on the Red River about 20 miles west of downtown El Dorado Springs with 2 companies of infantry under Major George Armstrong Custer and 6 companies of cavalry under Colonel Doniphan commanding 1st Cavalry Brigade led by Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Jarrell English As they started out only 11 men out gunned 5 Mexicans who had been hiding among trees along the river bank . When they reached Black Canyon after 8 hours travel over difficult terrain they found no sign but instead 25 tons (22 metric tons) of treasure including cannons and mortars plus 1 million Dollars worth (valued today at $24 million) including several horses , mules and rifles After returning to camp that night Major English reported finding 4 gunboats moored downstream waiting for supplies while other troops spent the night building pontoon bridges across the stream so that they could go back upstream tomorrow morning They also discovered two live mines planted along one side @21 feet below water line while both banks were covered with boulders weighing approximately 55 pounds each blocking navigation There was no way across without explosives or swimming which would have destroyed all their equipment& A small force consisting mainlyof 350 volunteers managedto cross next day using a pontoon bridge over Chisum Creek rapids but upon landing fought 3 pitched battles with 50 men against 30 Mexican defenders before withdrawing 400 miles south reaching San Antonio Texas on January 26th 1865 A

Since its incorporation into Searcy County, El Dorado has been an important community for agriculture and trade within the county. In 2001, the city renovated and extended its Main Street downtown complex which included a new library and various retail businesses including a restaurant and convenience store. Today, El Dorado remains an important cultural center for the surrounding rural communities; it is home to several theaters as well as museums including the Arkadelphia Museum of History and Art which features local historical artifacts from both Arkansas and Mexican history together with exhibits on archeology and anthropology
El Dorado was founded in 1836 by James W. Richardson and the town became a major crossroads for the early Arkansas Valley. The Richardsons were instrumental in the development of El Dorado County, which includes present-day downtown Little Rock. The first settlement at what is now El Dorado was called "Arkansas" on July 16, 1836, when surveyors discovered land that would eventually become El Dorado County. The name came from an Indian word meaning "golden land." In 1838, Andrew Jackson appointed Colonel John C. Frémont as governor of Colorado Territory and ordered him to explore the area around modern Little Rock for potential sites for new settlements. Frémont's explorations led him to believe that he had found gold in what is now Arkansas and he named the Valley after his findings: El Dorado County was created on November 3, 1838. By 1840, most of present-day Little Rock had been developed as a result of ongoing trade with settlers living near Fort Smith (later Alvarado) and Fayetteville (now Fort Worth). Services such as transportation, irrigation systems, and mining began to take hold in this location; these activities helped spur economic growth that has continued to this day. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, many Arkansas blacks fled Louisiana during the period of Reconstruction because they felt their rights were not being respected under Republican rule. Many of them traveled through Missouri or Texas into Mexico before finally reaching California in search of freedom and opportunity; some reached Asheville before falling back into poverty within days upon arrival there.
