Jonesboro is located on I-24 about twenty miles east of Little Rock and eighty miles west of Memphis. The town was founded in 1872 by Methodist missionaries from Illinois who were looking for a new home for their church after leaving Nauvoo, Illinois. The first post office was established in 1875 and the first school was built in 1879. The present courthouse was built in 1909 and it is one of the oldest public buildings in Jonesboro. Jonesboro has been identified as an important center for Black American culture since its inception and has been home to many African American leaders, including Jimmy Carter Sr., Jesse Jackson Jr., Rev. Wright Davidson, author Maya Angelou, singer Cissy Houston, actor Tom Hanks and entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey. In 2008, Jonesboro was named "Upper Midwest's Best Place to Live" by "Newsweek". Today, local businesses include banks (Citizens National), restaurants (Fiesta Mexican Grill), schools (John F Kennedy High School & Trinity Baptist School), health clinics (Arkansas Baptist Medical Center) and a variety of retail stores including JCPenney/ Sears/ Kmart/ Mega Mart Plus/. The largest employer in Jonesboro is Walmart which employs over 1,000 people at two distribution centers across the town limits - one near downtown and one just outside of the high school campus area. Jonesboro is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and home to the Jonesboro Arsenal Ammunition Plant. The first settler in Jonesboro was John Grimes, who arrived on July 10, 1820. The town was laid out by James Pogue in 1824. The first post office was established in 1827; it was renamed Jonesboro in 1881 after General Ulysses S. Grant's wife Julia Boggs Jones. Jonesborough Bridge connecting Orchard Road with US Highway 65 opened February 11, 1929; it replaced a wooden bridge that had been destroyed by a tornado on October 15 that year. In 1951 the plant closed due to low demand for ammunition and other products from outside the state of Arkansas; however, it reopened as an industrial park in 1992 with new production facilities that continue to this day. AFSO-Ammunition Park (now known as Little Rock Arsenal)was located adjacent to I-70 between miles 9 & 10 east of downtown Little Rock before 1957 when US 66 came into being and bypassed I-70 entirely south of town line making Jonesboro become an unincorporated community again much like what happened back then just without any ammo production going on
